4 things I wish I knew before moving abroad

After 15 years of living abroad, I’ve been through a lot: the excitement of new beginnings, tough adjustments, disappointments and everything in between.

If I could go back and give myself some advice before all the moves, here’s what I’d say:

1. You might never feel fully “local” — and that’s okay
You can adapt, embrace the culture, even think in another language…  and still not fully blend in. That’s OK. You’re creating your own cultural blend.

2. Real friendships take time
When I moved to Canada for my studies, I immediately got ‘party friends’ – but not the kind of friends I can discuss deep personal topics with. These friendships came later. Because trust and lasting connections take time!

3. You’ll miss home — even if you were happy and ready to leave!
It’s possible to feel excited about moving and still miss familiar things. That’s not a contradiction or a sign that the new location isn’t the right fit — just the complexity of being human.

4. A new country won’t solve all inner struggles
That’s a big one for me, personally. Our habits, fears, and doubts tend to travel with us, so ‘new country – new me!’ doesn’t always work.

The good news? A new context can help us try different approaches and notice our patterns — and learn new ways to address them, if needed.

Relocating — whether across countries or cities — isn’t just about geography. It’s also an inner journey, and you don’t have to go through it alone.

Take care!
